This painting titled “The Haven”, which symbolizes the warm, comfortable, harmonic and safe feelings offered to the family members by a warm and blessed “home”. The bright coloured blooms of the reeds amongst the darker coloured background representing the family members or the love of family always being the light that enlightened us in the darkness or during the undesirable moments in our lives. That often giving us care, expectation, comfort and encouragement while we are striving to live for life.

Chinese brush painting is a rare endeavor of Chinese traditional culture and art. It is also the tremendous cultural carrier of the Chinese nation with the richest historical heritage value. Its origin can be traced back to the beginning of time when the ancestors initially created scripts to record and celebrate all kinds of events. Starting from the simple line works, it gradually develops into slightly three-dimensional and with textural effect, showcasing the ancestor artists' creative talents and performance skills.


Later, it experienced the transformation through various generations, removing its impurities but retaining its essence. It accumulated depth and richness, then became a sight to behold. Due to the gradual attention and promotion of Chinese culture and art by different countries, its movement has been influential and embraced. Even among the circles of international art investors and collectors, Chinese brush paintings captured well acceptance and a reasonable development prospect. Gradually, the "Freehand Style Chinese Brush Painting" became a popular art style in the daily life of the general public. It is a gratifying phenomenon.

Shen Ying's paintings are characterized by the hallmarks of traditional Chinese painting's perspectival and stylistic ink brush techniques while also utilizing vibrant and bold colors.


Under the tutelage of Lim Kay Hiong, she has spent years observing and learning to master the skills required to produce a Shanghai-style painting. A master herself, she has proven to be the very few who have managed to grasp it.

It is an opportunity to showcase artworks that a large audience would not have otherwise seen due to the constraint of physical space. Shen Ying's paintings are characterized by the hallmarks of traditional Chinese painting's perspectival and stylistic ink brush techniques while also utilizing vibrant and bold colors.


Under the tutelage of Lim Kay Hiong, she has spent years observing and learning to master the skills required to produce a Shanghai-style painting. A master herself, she has proven to be the very few who have managed to grasp it.


Anyone who comes across Shen Ying would describe her as warm, humble, and approachable. She is more than ever willing to teach and share her knowledge and experience. She also encourages many emerging artists and peers by attending their exhibitions and talks. As a result, she is well-respected in the art industry in Penang and Singapore.


Like other works of art and cultural relics, high-quality Chinese painting and calligraphy work help cultivate sentiment, beautify life, enhance personal accomplishment, and have good investment characteristics. Therefore, they become one of the active factors among the elements of modern life, suitable for both appreciation and value preservation. Moreover, they are the soft components that shape an elegant society.

Currently presented in the form of a virtual tour, The Virtual Exhibition by Shen Ying is available to the public worldwide. It is an opportunity to showcase artworks that a large audience would not have otherwise seen due to the constraint of physical space. In addition, this project attempts to explore the potential of online spaces as a gallery for contemporary artworks.


This method has many advantages. Firstly, it saves money on renting physical space for an exhibition. Secondly, it is environmentally friendly because there is no need to transport materials or waste disposal. Thirdly, it ensures that the artwork is seen by as many people as possible - because geographical location or access to physical space will no longer be the restricting factor. Fourthly, this virtual exhibition will also be a safe environment for people who are not comfortable with viewing artwork in person. The disadvantages are that people might not be able to interact with the artwork physically.

After her mother passed away, the then-three-year-old Shen Ying was enrolled early in kindergarten. Kids usually start to enter kindergarten at six years old during that period. At that time, her loving Principal cum pastor of the church where the kindergarten was attached often bought her coloring books. She was taught to apply colors, tones, shades, and lines. With those basics and frequent practices, her skill in the art was advanced compared to other kids, as she had started much earlier. As a result, she performed outstandingly in the subject of art during primary and secondary school. She won many trophies in art competitions. Although she was in the science stream during the high school government examination, she took art subject as an additional paper and scored an excellent result.


After being asked by her Malayan Teacher's College lecturer to paint two Chinese brush paintings for exhibition during the preparation for a Chinese cultural night event, she courageously made a replica of two portrait paintings in four-foot full-length for the said exhibition. Her works were well received and finally collected by her lecturer after the presentation. That was her first exposure to Chinese brush art.


After graduating from Malayan Teacher's College in 1990, Shen Ying dedicated herself to the education field. She was once appointed as the Head to lead the teaching of art subjects during her education career at the primary school of SJK (C) Kwang Hwa Butterworth. Beginning of the year 2012, she learned Chinese brush painting under the guidance of her enlightenment teacher, Ng Hun Kim. Due to her interest in Freehand Style Chinese brush painting, at the end of 2012, she traveled from Penang to Singapore every weekend to seek tutelage under Lim Kay Hiong. Lim Kay Hiong is the acclaimed disciple of Wu Chang Shuo, the grandmaster of Shanghai School Haipai Chinese Brush Painting. Since then, Shen Ying has focused on learning and delving into the art of Shanghai School's freehand style Chinese brush painting. Due to her rigorous demand for quality and satisfying work of practice, it was only achieved after dozens of repeated attempts, studies, research, and revision. Shen Ying's enthusiasm for art and her earnest learning spirit toward art-making reflect the right learning attitude of a pragmatic artist.


After Shen Ying's persevering hard work and study, she mastered and comprehended the basics of the Shanghai School art, including its traditional theories and the living philosophies, attitudes, and spirits depicted through the art of Chinese brush painting. According to Shen Ying, "freehand" lies in using the brush (to draw), stressing the strong basics and skills, and emphasizing the artistic conception and connotation or meaning depicted in paintings. The freehand style is about drawing out with a bold brushstroke but not applying colors. The kind of paintings of the Shanghai School of art often showcases the imposing manner of the brushwork and the richness of contents. Her works always look elegant, vivid, and lively with concise brush strokes and the input of the elements (such as the expression, shape/form, emotion, and context).


Besides continuous dedication, Shen Ying inherited the ambition to sustain the discipleship of the said art movement, hoping to continuously pass it down from one generation to another generation. Shen Ying started to conduct art classes to teach Chinese brush painting art to pass
down what she had learned. She hopes that the Haipai movement could eventually have a foothold in the world through art teaching.


Shen Ying has now been teaching Chinese brush painting art for four years. The number of her students has increased year by year. Some of her students purposely traveled far from foreign countries such as Australia, America, Singapore, and India to come to learn from her. While dedicated to preserving the essence of Shanghai School art, she has not forgotten about being creative and innovative to break through the traditional limitations during the creative process in art-making. She strives to modernize classic art by making traditional art more popular among the general public and more readily accepted, appreciated, and loved by people from different places with different cultural backgrounds. Eventually, classic art and culture could be further developed and continuously passed down to future generations.


After Shen Ying's solo art exhibitions held in Singapore and Penang in 2015 and 2016, Shen Ying's art has been well received and well-acknowledged among the art circles. Today, Shen Ying's freehand
style in painting flowers, birds, insects, fishes, plums, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums, and other works with the local cultural and festive elements are well appreciated by the collectors and the general public. The collectors who collected her works came from various ethnic groups from all over the world. This proved that Shen Ying's artistic creation had been recognized and affirmed after her dedicated complex works in the creative art-making process over the years.

嗣后进入马来亚师范就读时，适逢师范举办华人文化晚会，巧需两幅水墨画供展览，胆粗气壮的她毛遂自荐下笔四尺全开人物画供展览，深获好评。展后，画作被导师要了去，也开展了她水墨画生涯的里程碑。


1990年毕业于马来亚师范大学后，沈颖献身教育界。在北海光华小学任教期间，被委任为美术课主任。 2012年始，她在启蒙老师黄汉钦教导下，学习水墨画。2012年尾，由于特别倾情于海派大写意，在机缘巧合下，他毅然决定每个周末从槟城飞到新加坡，拜师吴昌硕海派传人林家雄大师门下，专注学习与钻研海派大写意艺术。遵循海派大写意的要求，向来十分严谨的她，单是一幅满意的习作，已是经过无数次不断地磨炼和反复尝试、研究与改进后，方可创作成功。沈颖对艺术的热忧与执著，完完全全地表现出一位务实艺术家的崇高理念。


沈颖的不屈不饶、坚持不懈地苦练，让她掌握了海派大写意所讲究的基础理论，以及领略了艺术传承的生活理念与精神。依沈颖解说，“写意”的意义在于用笔(写)，注重功力与技巧，讲究画中的意境与内涵。大写意乃是以大笔触境而生，无法被涂鸦出来的。海派作品的画风，往往呈现在其运笔的气势与内涵的意蕴。沈颖紧记乃师的教海，大写意用笔必须精简，不刻意描绘细节，以简练的笔触，兼具神、形、情、境与气韵等创作因子，培育出笔墨跌宕、气韵生动的著作。


如今，除了继续投入水墨艺术的创作，沈颖也继承师门与海派大师前辈们传承海派水墨画的抱负，开班教学，希望能像尊师般言传身教，让海派艺术立足世界。


至今，沈颖授课已有四年，学生逐年递增，更有远至新加坡、印度、澳洲、美国等向她钻研的学生们。不管是水墨艺术的教育或创作，沈颖都抱着一个信念，即是继承优良中华海派的传统艺术文化，坚持保留海派绘画精髓，但也不忘求新求变、突破传统的局限。力求让水墨艺术现代化，使其更为普罗大众所接受，让不同地理、文化和背景的人们接纳与欣赏，以求代代延续。

The Haven
避风港




This painting titled “The Haven”, which symbolizes the warm, comfortable, harmonic and safe feelings offered to the family members by a warm and blessed “home”. The bright coloured blooms of the reeds amongst the darker coloured background representing the family members or the love of family always being the light that enlightened us in the darkness or during the undesirable moments in our lives. That often giving us care, expectation, comfort and encouragement while we are striving to live for life.




这幅画的题名标为“避风港”，它象征一个温馨的 “家” 给予家人的宁静、舒适、和谐及安全的感觉。在深邃的背景中点缀着亮眼的芦花儿，意味着家人或亲情乃是我们生活处于黑暗中的明灯，常带给为生活打拼的我们关怀与期盼，安慰与鼓励。
